It’s funny. You step into a role in your business and over time, if you’re not careful, you sort of become a character of yourself rather than your true self. And that’s what this is about. This is a turning point for this podcast. Um, normally on this podcast, I just talk about marketing methods that have worked for me. And that’s a great topic. I think that that most of the people that listen to this, that’s why they listen. And we’re going to continue talking about marketing. Don’t get me wrong. Uh, but I feel like one of the things that’s missing from this podcast sometimes in the past is talking about the life stuff. Um, the real stuff as it’s happening. And I think that a lot of times you hear me talk about a problem that I solved maybe three months, six months, two years down the road from when I solved it.

And you don’t really get the, what I’m going through Headspace wise as I’m actually solving it. So before these are the reasons that I did, don’t do that. It’s not trying to hide anything or make anything look better than what it is. It’s just the kind of person that I am. I tend to internalize a problem, a negative in my life, and I solve it internally without talking to too many people about it, maybe my life. Um, but I tend to solve these problems internally, uh, before I make public what the solution was. So you won’t hear me talk about a problem as I’m going through it a lot of times, and that’s just sort of the way that I work and it’s not, like I said, trying to hide anything. It’s just the way that my brain processes problems. I’m a very internalized person with negatives and positives.

I can speak about all day, you know, solutions I can speak about all day, but it’s hard for me to talk about a problem as I’m going through it. And so one of the things that I wanted to do with this podcast is there’s a lot of you out there right now that are on the upswing. You’re just starting to build your thing. And maybe that’s why you listen to this podcast is because you learn some stuff. But I think it’s going to be interesting and more interesting. If this podcast becomes a documentation of what I’m doing to solve problems, what I’m doing to grow my business, what I’m doing to be a better human being, as those things are happening. And so that’s what it’s going to be. We’re going to talk marketing, we’re going to talk about business. We’re going to talk about entrepreneurship, but we’re going to be talking about things as they happen.

And so sometimes this is going to be podcasts. It’s extremely hard to listen to because you were going to see the flaws. And when I say hard to listen to meaning, it’s going to be hard for me to record it because you were going to see the flaws that I have both in my thinking. Um, and as I’m going through a problem, you’re going to see some of the missteps as I go through it. And that’s okay. And I think that’s valuable though. So that’s what we’re gonna be doing. And for those of you that have enjoyed the podcast and you only love the marketing stuff, let me suggest something. I’ve got a podcast coming out in the next month called digital agency insiders. You can get all of the straight marketing stuff from there, and that’s going to be a great place for you to go.

This podcast at times is going to seem like I have a split personality, but what I can promise you is you will get a behind the scenes of what’s really happening as it happens. And what I’m trying to give you is an unprecedented view of what people are actually going through as entrepreneurs on the journey to building something big. And so if you don’t know my history, I was a chiropractor starting out. And from being a chiropractor, I did really well there because of some internet savvy and marketing online. And from there, I turned that into a business where I was helping other businesses, brick and mortar businesses at first, and then other online businesses out there. I use my expertise to consult and help them with their stuff. And then from there I built a teaching business that taught those methods to the masses.

And over the years, I’ve built a multimillion dollar business by helping people at all those different levels. So that’s, that’s sort of my background and that’s how I make living. I get to work from home and I have a very weird life compared to most people, a very free life compared to most people because of the type of business that I’ve chosen to go into. So this week, uh, what is going on this week? Well, I’m kinda, I’m kind of coming through some stuff where I am not an expert. Usually when you hear me talk about something, uh, I have proven it. I have tested it and I have beat it to death before you hear me teach it. That’s, that’s all there is to it. But this, this last week, this last couple months has been exhilarating, but extremely difficult for me because it’s been having to learn a new skill and that new skill is this it’s podcasting.

I’ve been podcasting for years. I have taught the iTunes, not just a certain section. I have literally taught the iTunes charts. Uh, but that was before podcasting really caught on. And so I get back into podcasting really seriously because I love the concept of talking to a microphone and talking to you directly. I feel like if you’re listening to me right now, we’re having a direct conversation. You could literally hit me up on my website right now. And you could give me a response to this podcast and I would write you back be so to me, even though I’m not talking to just one person, it’s a very intimate conversation. But the thing about podcasting is it’s. How do you, how do you grow a podcast? How do you put together a podcast that people want to listen to? How do you keep your train of thought together?

And that’s not the point of this podcast by the way, but how do you keep your train of thought together? So that it’s entertaining. And so what I’ve been doing over the last little bit, this is what I’m struggling with right now. And I’m really learning this process the hard way. And I, it’s the way that I want to learn it is I am building a system for podcasting that fits my personality, but also a system of podcasting that puts together really compelling content. Something that really helps people. It’s not the glossed over version of the whole story. It’s the actual story. And so in that process, uh, I’ve had to learn a lot of things. I’ve had to learn, uh, audio editing, even though I could outsource that to someone else, I want to learn it because I feel like I can outsource it better if I have a good sense of what I want and how that actually comes together.

So I’ve had to learn that I’ve had to learn how to do podcasts with more than one person. This is a one-person podcast, 99% of the time. And it’s really easy to sit down in front of a microphone and record and put something out. What’s not so easy is getting sit down with another person or sitting down with three other people and putting together a podcast. And so over the last few months, you know, to sort of put myself into a position of student again, and I feel like too many times, I’m not in the position of student and that’s a weakness that I have, but putting myself in the position of student again, I started a podcast called the upshot NBA podcast. If you were into basketball, it’s going to be a podcast that you’re going to find a lot of fun, but I wanted to put this podcast together originally, just so that I got to hang out with a few of my friends a lot more than I normally did.

And so we started putting this podcast together and it’s been a lot of fun. Uh, but it was hard. It was hard because all of a sudden I had to put together a studio that accommodated four microphones at once. And then you have to, once you do that, you have to map the content for, you know, for different people talking, but then you have to edit the content down. Once it’s recorded. There’s a lot of coordination. There’s a lot of editing. There’s a lot of marketing that goes into this. And while it’s difficult to put all these things together, cause I’ve never done them before. It’s something that I think is powerful. So we’ve put this podcast out. It launched about a month ago and already this podcast is starting to grow by leaps and bounds. Uh, but I still don’t know what I’m doing.

The ultimate goal of this podcast mind you is to have a ton of listeners obviously, but the ultimate goal of this podcast is to put that brand on the map with the existing old guard. So your ESPNs, your, uh, if you’re a local news for a particular basketball team, we want you to know about us. We’re trying to get a lot of opportunities, uh, from this particular podcast. And least probably of all of them is to build a giant audience, right? That, that comes, that comes as you’re going. The other thing though, that we’re really trying to do is we’re trying to understand how to make these connections with the podcast. And I think a lot of podcasters out there, that’s why they do podcasts is just as a connector sort of thing. Anyways, I say all that to say this right now, I am in the middle of extreme discomfort because my business is going great.

The business that I’ve been running for years is going great, but it’s not giving me the same sort of personal satisfaction that it used to. And the reason is, is because, um, it’s not growing fast enough. I make great money. The money seems to keep coming in doing really well. The people that we teach they’re doing really well. Um, but the growth that I’m wanting to experience, we’re having to find other means to do that. And one of those means is podcast. And I, I saw a couple years back that if we wanted to really grow our digital marketing business in a big way, we were going to have to get more serious about podcasts. And so to do that, instead of just focusing on just one podcast, I wanted to do lots of different kinds of podcasts. So I could find the fit because I think that in this digital marketing space too, uh, nobody’s really done the podcasts that right, just yet, uh, there there’s folks that are close, uh, Pat Flynn, for instance, uh, he’s doing a good shop, but I think that there’s a lot to be done.

And a lot of innovation that can come into the digital marketing space and teaching people marketing. Uh, but the only way I can find that is by going out and listening to podcasts that are outside of our space and doing podcasts myself that are outside of that space. So I say all that to say, this, this podcast is changing. This podcast is going to be more behind the scenes. This podcast is going to be a lot of marketing stuff, but it’s also going to be a lot of what I’m thinking as I’m implementing those things. Most of the courses that you’ve bought for me, if you’ve bought a course in the past has had a lot to do with something I’d beaten to death proven it’s been tested. It’s great, but wouldn’t it be cool? Wouldn’t it be cool if you could see all the things I’m doing, all the failures along the way, but all the things I’m doing along the way, six months before they get to course four and seeing me fall on my face, uh, in seeing me finally breakthrough, and that’s the things that I teach, that’s how they get there.

But I think it’s interesting here. Uh, if you could hear that process as it goes, because I have no interests these days and coming off as perfect, I have no interest these days coming off as a guru, I have a lot of interests these days and making a real human connection and showing you what’s going on behind the scenes of my business in my life, uh, as it happens, because I think that the number one issue that we have as digital marketers who are teaching other digital marketers is, uh, sometimes it seems like pie in the sky because it actually is pie in the sky. You’re getting to see the beaten up solution, six months down the road after it’s been proven, it’s a lot more interesting to see it as it grows and the failures along the way. Okay. So I hope you enjoyed this one.

We’re going to talk about a lot of real human stuff for the next little bit. Like I said, if you want straight marketing, go check out our podcast, digital agency insiders. If you want to see the weird way that I’m struggling with building a new podcast in a niche that I’m not comfortable with, go check out the upshot MBA podcast and see your serial progress seeker. This one is going to be about just that progress, seeking growth and all the things that are happening in my business along the way. So I hope you dig it. I hope that I’m not scared too many of you off. Sometimes mindset is something I think we all ignore, even though it’s so important to what we’re doing. And I hope you’ll stick with me and listen, as we build this thing. So that said lots more coming week after week, I’m going to do one podcast walking you through.

What’s really going on behind the scenes as it’s happening, not what was going on behind the scene six months ago, or what’s happening now. Uh, you know, in terms of what I want you to say, I’m going to be walking you through the dirty, the ugly, but also the really cool because we went through the dirty and the ugly, and I hope that’s something that’s valuable to you. So this is a setting the stage episode, which means I had to babble on a lot more and tell a lot more of the backstory coming on from here. We’re going to be much tighter with the episodes and much tighter with the thoughts that we’re gonna be getting forth. And I hope you find it valuable. All right. I love your time. If you’re listening to me right now and you’re still listing, it probably means that you’ve been with me for a while, or if you’re just fighting me, Hey, how are you doing?

But I think you’re going to have a good time with this. And I think this is going to be something that’s extremely illuminating into what really goes on with entrepreneurs, especially digital entrepreneurs. And hopefully you’ll share with me your stories too. I want to hear from you go to serial progress, seeker.com. Leave me a comment. Let me know what you think of this episode. There’ll be show notes for this episode. You can leave me that stuff here. If you enjoy this, leave me a review on iTunes. Let me know what you’re thinking there. I want to give you a real clear view. If you want to hear more marketing stuff, you can, like I said, listen to past episodes or go listen to our digital agency insiders podcast. That’s coming out in the next month. All right, that’s it. I don’t know what else to say. I’m pumped about this, but I don’t really know what this is going to be. I just know that there’s value in seeing what’s really going on behind the scenes as it’s actually happening rather than a story that’s told later on the road, when I’m going to forget

A lot of the really, uh, gory details. All right. Hope you enjoyed it. I’ll see you next week. [inaudible] well, won’t you go get you something. Don’t hang with it for nothing. I see that we different [inaudible] places.
